Elementary readers will have the opportunity to learn more about some of their favorite modes of transportation in Abdo’s Early Transportation Encyclopedias. This reviewer had the opportunity to evaluate the volume on Tractors. The title opened with an introductory chapter explaining the basics of how a tractor works. A timeline of tractor history is also provided, along with a brief overview of the basics of crop farming. Subsequent chapters are divided by types of tractors (e.g. compact tractors, crawlers, row crop tractors, and combine harvesters), with numerous profiles of specific makes and models of tractors provided. Each tractor profile includes basic historical information, pro/cons of the tractor’s features, and several pictures, as well as “Fun Fact” and “Did You Know” sidebars with additional information. Back matter includes a glossary, index, and QR code which links to additional online resources. 

THOUGHTS: Are your younger students fans of machines and vehicles? Then this is the series for them! Readers will appreciate the wide variety of vehicles profiled in each easy to read volume and will also learn quite a bit about the history of the vehicle, how it has evolved and changed over time and what it looks like today. A great choice for browsing or for research. Highly recommended for those looking to update their transportation/vehicle collections.
